When David was a Shepherd Boy
![]()
When David was a shepherd boy
He loved to tend his sheep,
They fed on grass and luscious herbs,
And drank of waters deep.
And often while he watched the sheep
He sang neath starry sky,
The Lord's my shepherd I'll not want,
He makes me down to lie.

One day a roaring lion came
From out the stony hill,
And carried off a tiny lamb,
The little thing to kill.
Another time the flock was chased
By a growling bear,
But David prayed to God for strength
And killed them then and there.

This youth with courage, love and faith
Was brought before the king;
And soon the great bold he killed
With a pebble from a sling
(The people feared this evil man,
But didn't think it odd
That he and all his armies
Should defy the living God.)
And God was pleased for David had
A heart just like his own;
He said that he would make him king
And reign upon His throne.
